Calathea is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Marantaceae. They are commonly called calatheas or (like their relatives) prayer plants. About 200 species formerly assigned to Calathea are now in the genus Goeppertia. Calathea currently contains around 60 species. Native to the tropical Americas, many of the species are popular as pot plants due to their decorative leaves and, in some species, colorful inflorescences.

Light
Calatheas thrive in medium to bright indirect light, but can tolerate low indirect light.
Watering
Water every 1-2 weeks, allowing soil to dry out half way down between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.
Temperature
Calatheas prefer temperatures in the 65°F-85°F range (18°C-30°C), similar to their tropical native habitat.
Humidity
Calatheas prefer higher humidity if possible.
Feed
Fertilize Dottie monthly during spring and summer with a general-purpose houseplant fertilizer.
Height & Growth Rate
Calathea rarely grow any more than 25 inches tall and wide. All in all, it’s a perfectly proportioned medium- or large-sized houseplant that works best in a container or pot of about 6 inches.

Calatheas are pet-friendly! They are considered non-toxic, making them safe to keep around cats and dogs.
