Calathea orbifolia is a species of prayer plant. Native to Bolivia, it is commonly kept as a houseplant in temperate zones for its ornamental leaves. It requires partial shade, humidity, and good drainage to thrive.
Description
Light
The plant prefers to be in a bright room without exposure to direct sunlight. Direct sunlight is too harsh on the plant (potentially scorching the leaves) and can dehydrate it too quickly.
Watering
Calathea orbifolia likes to remain moist but not soggy, and it copes better with less water than too much water.
Temperature
Prefers warm to high temperatures, ideally between 18-23°C, but can cope with as low as 15°C.
Humidity
The plant thrives in high-humidity areas of 50 to 60 percent at minimum.
Feed
Calathea orbifolias aren’t the hungriest of plants, so unless you’re wanting very fast growth, you don’t have to worry too much about fertilizing.
Height & Growth Rate
Calathea orbifolia is a moderately fast growing plant, ultimately reaching heights of around 1 metre. Leaves can grow to 30cm in width.
Toxicity
This Calathea is considered non-toxic, therefore safe around children and pets.
Origin
Calathea orbifolia originates from the Tropical Americas.
